1Then said Jehovah unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind would not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.

1Then the LORD said to me, 'Even if Moses and Samuel stood here pleading before me, I would not feel sorry for these people. Send them away from my presence; let them go!

2And it shall come to pass, when they say unto thee, Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith Jehovah: Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for captivity, to captivity.

2If they ask you, "Where should we go?" tell them this is what the LORD says: "Those destined for death, to death; those destined for the sword, to the sword; those destined for starvation, to starvation; and those destined for captivity, to captivity."

3And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith Jehovah: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the birds of the heavens, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and to destroy.

3"I will send four kinds of destroyers against them," declares the LORD: "the sword to kill, dogs to drag them away, and the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth to devour and destroy them."

4And I will cause them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.

4"I will make them an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem."

5For who will have pity upon thee, O Jerusalem? or who will bemoan thee? or who will turn aside to ask of thy welfare?

5"Who will have pity on you, Jerusalem? Who will mourn for you? Who will even stop to ask how you are doing?"

6Thou hast rejected me, saith Jehovah, thou art gone backward: therefore have I stretched out my hand against thee, and destroyed thee; I am weary with repenting.

6"You have rejected me," declares the LORD. "You keep turning your back on me. So I will reach out my hand to strike and destroy you; I am tired of showing mercy."

7And I have winnowed them with a fan in the gates of the land; I have bereaved them of children, I have destroyed my people; they returned not from their ways.

7"I will scatter them with a winnowing fork at the city gates of the land. I will bring bereavement and destruction on my people, because they refuse to change their ways."

8Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas; I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a destroyer at noonday: I have caused anguish and terrors to fall upon her suddenly.

8"I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. At noontime I will bring a destroyer against the mothers of young men; I will suddenly bring anguish and terror upon them."

9She that hath borne seven languisheth; she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was yet day; she hath been put to shame and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith Jehovah.

9"The mother of seven children grows faint and gasps for breath. Her sun sets while it is still day; she is disgraced and humiliated. I will hand over the survivors to be killed by the sword of their enemies," declares the LORD.

10Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet every one of them doth curse me.

10How miserable I am, my mother, that you gave birth to me! I am a man who has to argue and fight with the whole country. I have not lent money or borrowed it, yet everyone curses me.

11Jehovah said, Verily I will strengthen thee for good; verily I will cause the enemy to make supplication unto thee in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

11The LORD said, "I will surely strengthen you for a good purpose; I will surely make your enemies plead with you in times of disaster and distress."

12Can one break iron, even iron from the north, and brass?

12"Can anyone break iron—especially iron from the north—or bronze?"

13Thy substance and thy treasures will I give for a spoil without price, and that for all thy sins, even in all thy borders.

13"I will give away your wealth and your treasures as plunder, without any cost, because of all the sins you have committed throughout your country."

14And I will make them to pass with thine enemies into a land which thou knowest not; for a fire is kindled in mine anger, which shall burn upon you.

14"I will make you serve your enemies in a land you do not know, for my anger has started a fire that will burn against you."

15O Jehovah, thou knowest; remember me, and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered reproach.

15LORD, you understand. Remember me and care for me. Pay back those who persecute me. Do not let me die while you are being patient with them; remember that I suffer insults for your sake.

16Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy words were unto me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by thy name, O Jehovah, God of hosts.

16When your words came, I ate them. They were my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, LORD God of Heaven’s Armies.

17I sat not in the assembly of them that make merry, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand; for thou hast filled me with indignation.

17I never sat with the crowds who were laughing and having fun. I sat alone because your hand was on me and you filled me with anger at their sin.

18Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou indeed be unto me as a deceitful brook, as waters that fail?

18Why is my pain endless and my wound so bad that it won't heal? Will you be like a deceptive brook to me, like a spring that goes dry?

19Therefore thus saith Jehovah, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, that thou mayest stand before me; and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: they shall return unto thee, but thou shalt not return unto them.

19Therefore, this is what the LORD says: "If you repent, I will restore you so that you may serve me. If you speak valuable words instead of worthless ones, you will be my spokesman. These people must turn to you, but you must not turn to them."

20And I will make thee unto this people a fortified brazen wall; and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith Jehovah.

20"I will make you like a fortified wall of bronze to these people. They will fight against you, but they will not defeat you, for I am with you to rescue and save you," declares the LORD.

21And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.

21"I will keep you safe from the power of the wicked and rescue you from the hands of the violent."
