1Who hath believed our message? and to whom hath the arm of Jehovah been revealed?

1Who has believed what we have heard? To whom has the power of the LORD been revealed?

2For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

2He grew up before him like a young plant, like a root growing in dry ground. He had no special look or majesty to attract us; there was nothing in his appearance that made us want him.

3He was despised, and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised; and we esteemed him not.

3He was hated and rejected by people. He was a man who knew deep pain and was familiar with suffering. People hid their faces from him; he was looked down on, and we did not value him.

4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

4He certainly took our suffering on himself and carried our sorrows; yet we thought he was being punished by God, struck down and beaten by him.

5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

5But he was pierced for our sins and crushed for our wrongs. He was punished so that we could have peace, and we are healed because of his wounds.

6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

6All of us have wandered away like sheep; each of us has gone our own way. But the LORD has put the guilt of all of us on him.

7He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

7He was treated cruelly and suffered, but he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to be killed. Like a sheep is silent while its wool is cut, he did not open his mouth.

8By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who among them considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due?

8He was taken away by unfair trials and judgment. No one of his time cared that he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck down because of the sins of my people.

9And they made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

9He was given a grave among the wicked, yet he was with the rich in his death, even though he had done no violence and never told a lie.

10Yet it pleased Jehovah to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Jehovah shall prosper in his hand.

10But it was the LORD’s plan to crush him and fill him with grief. When his life is made a sacrifice for sin, he will see his descendants and live a long life; the LORD’s plans will succeed through him.

11He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities.

11After his soul suffers, he will see the result and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will make many people right with God, and he will carry their sins.

12Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors: yet he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

12Therefore, I will give him a share among the great, and he will divide the prizes with the strong. This is because he was willing to die and was counted among sinners. He carried the sins of many and prayed for those who did wrong.
