1God, having of old time spoken unto the fathers in the prophets by divers portions and in divers manners,
1In the past, God spoke many times and in many different ways to our ancestors through the prophets.
2hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds;
2But now, in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.
3who being the effulgence of his glory, and the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had made purification of sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
3The Son reflects God’s own glory and is the exact copy of God’s nature. He holds everything together by his powerful command. After he provided a way for people to be purified from their sins, he sat down in the highest place of honor next to the Majestic God in heaven.
4having become by so much better than the angels, as he hath inherited a more excellent name than they.
4This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is much greater than theirs.
5For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be to him a Father, And he shall be to me a Son?
5For God never said to any angel, 'You are my Son; today I have become your Father.' And he never said of an angel, 'I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.'
6And when he again bringeth in the firstborn into the world he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
6And when God brought his firstborn Son into the world, he said, 'Let all of God’s angels worship him.'
7And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels winds, And his ministers a flame of fire:
7Regarding the angels, God says, 'He makes his angels like winds and his servants like flames of fire.'
8but of the Sonhe saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; And the sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
8But about the Son he says, 'Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever. You will rule your kingdom with total fairness.'
9Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee With the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
9'You loved what is right and hated what is wrong. Therefore, God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy more than anyone else.'
10And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning didst lay the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the works of thy hands:
10He also says, 'Lord, in the beginning you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.'
11They shall perish; but thou continuest: And they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
11'They will disappear, but you will remain. They will all wear out like old clothes.'
12And as a mantle shalt thou roll them up, As a garment, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, And thy years shall not fail.
12'You will roll them up like a cloak, and they will be changed like clothing. But you are always the same, and your life will never end.'
