1And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifthmonth, the tenthdayof the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of Jehovah, and sat before me.
1On August 14, during the seventh year of exile, some of the leaders of Israel came to ask for a message from the LORD, and they sat down in front of me.
3Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Is it to inquire of me that ye are come? As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, I will not be inquired of by you.
3'Son of man, speak to the leaders of Israel and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Have you come to ask me for advice? As surely as I live, I will not let you ask anything of me.’
4Wilt thou judge them, son of man, wilt thou judge them? Cause them to know the abominations of their fathers;
4Are you ready to judge them, son of man? Are you ready? Then confront them with the disgusting sins of their ancestors.
5and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: In the day when I chose Israel, and sware unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and made myself known unto them in the land of Egypt, when I sware unto them, saying, I am Jehovah your God;
5Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I chose Israel, I made a promise to the descendants of Jacob. I revealed myself to them in the land of Egypt and swore to them, saying, I am the LORD your God.’
6in that day I sware unto them, to bring them forth out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands.
6On 그날, I promised to bring them out of Egypt into a land I had found for them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.
7And I said unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am Jehovah your God.
7I told them, ‘Every one of you must get rid of the vile idols you look at with longing. Do not make yourselves unclean with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.’
8But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me; they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.
8But they rebelled against me and refused to listen. They did not get rid of their vile idols or leave the idols of Egypt. Then I threatened to pour out my anger on them while they were still in Egypt.
9But I wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.
9However, I acted to protect the honor of my name so it would not be insulted by the nations living around them. I had revealed myself to the Israelites by bringing them out of Egypt in the sight of those nations.
10So I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness.
10So I brought them out of Egypt and led them into the desert.
11And I gave them my statutes, and showed them mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live in them.
11I gave them my laws and explained my rules to them—the rules that bring life to anyone who obeys them.
12Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am Jehovah that sanctifieth them.
12I also gave them my Sabbath days as a sign between us, so they would know that I am the LORD who makes them holy.
13But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they rejected mine ordinances, which if a man keep, he shall live in them; and my sabbaths they greatly profaned. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.
13But the people of Israel rebelled against me in the desert. They did not follow my laws and they rejected my rules, even though obeying them brings life. They also completely disgraced my Sabbath days. So I said I would pour out my anger and destroy them in the desert.
14But I wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I brought them out.
14But again, I acted to protect my name so it would not be insulted by the nations who had seen me bring them out.
15Moreover also I sware unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;
15Still, I swore to them in the desert that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—that land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands.
16because they rejected mine ordinances, and walked not in my statutes, and profaned my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
16I did this because they rejected my rules, did not follow my laws, and disgraced my Sabbaths; their hearts were set on their idols.
17Nevertheless mine eye spared them, and I destroyed them not, neither did I make a full end of them in the wilderness.
17Even so, I felt sorry for them and did not destroy them or wipe them out completely in the desert.
18And I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols.
18I said to their children in the desert, ‘Do not follow the laws of your parents or keep their rules. Do not make yourselves unclean with their idols.’
19I am Jehovah your God: walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them;
19I said, ‘I am the LORD your God. Follow my laws, be careful to obey my rules,
20and hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am Jehovah your God.
20and keep my Sabbaths holy. They will be a sign between me and you, so you will know that I am the LORD your God.’
21But the children rebelled against me; they walked not in my statutes, neither kept mine ordinances to do them, which if a man do, he shall live in them; they profaned my sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness.
21But the children also rebelled against me. They did not follow my laws or obey my rules, which bring life to those who keep them. They disgraced my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my anger and exhaust my fury against them in the desert.
22Nevertheless I withdrew my hand, and wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I brought them forth.
22But I held back my hand. I acted to protect my name so it would be honored by the nations who had seen me bring them out.
23Moreover I sware unto them in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the nations, and disperse them through the countries;
23I also swore to them in the desert that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them through foreign lands.
24because they had not executed mine ordinances, but had rejected my statutes, and had profaned my sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers’ idols.
24I did this because they had not obeyed my rules but had rejected my laws, disgraced my Sabbaths, and looked at their parents' idols with longing.
25Moreover also I gave them statutes that were not good, and ordinances wherein they should not live;
25I even let them follow laws that were not good and rules that would not lead to life.
26and I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am Jehovah.
26I let them become polluted by their own gifts—the sacrifice of their firstborn children in the fire. I did this to fill them with horror, so they would know that I am the LORD.
27Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: In this moreover have your fathers blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me.
27Therefore, son of man, speak to the people of Israel. Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Your ancestors insulted me even more by being unfaithful to me.’
28For when I had brought them into the land, which I sware to give unto them, then they saw every high hill, and every thick tree, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering; there also they made their sweet savor, and they poured out there their drink-offerings.
28When I brought them into the land I had promised to give them, they saw every high hill and every leafy tree, and they offered sacrifices there. They made me angry with their offerings, their soothing incense, and their wine offerings.
29Then I said unto them, What meaneth the high place whereunto ye go? So the name thereof is called Bamah unto this day.
29I said to them: ‘What is this high place you go to?’ So it is still called ‘The High Place’ to this day.
30Wherefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Do ye pollute yourselves after the manner of your fathers? and play ye the harlot after their abominations?
30Therefore, say to the people of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: Will you pollute yourselves just as your ancestors did? Will you chase after their disgusting idols?
31and when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, do ye pollute yourselves with all your idols unto this day? and shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, I will not be inquired of by you;
31When you offer your gifts and sacrifice your children in the fire, you continue to pollute yourselves with all your idols to this day. So should I let you ask me for advice, people of Israel? As surely as I live, says the Lord GOD, I will not let you ask me anything!
32and that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, in that ye say, We will be as the nations, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.
32You say, “We want to be like the nations, like the people of other lands who worship wood and stone.” But what you have in mind will never happen.
33As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, surely with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out, will I be king over you.
33As surely as I live, says the Lord GOD, I will rule over you with an iron fist, with great power and with my anger poured out.
34And I will bring you out from the peoples, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out;
34With my great power and poured-out anger, I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the countries where you were scattered.
35and I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there will I enter into judgment with you face to face.
35I will bring you into the desert of the nations, and there I will judge you face to face.
36Like as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I enter into judgment with you, saith the Lord Jehovah.
36Just as I judged your ancestors in the desert of Egypt, I will judge you, says the Lord GOD.
37And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant;
37I will examine you as you pass under my rod, and I will bring you back into the life of the covenant.
38and I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me; I will bring them forth out of the land where they sojourn, but they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.
38I will purge from among you those who rebel and sin against me. I will bring them out of the countries where they live, but they will not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
39As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Go ye, serve every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me; but my holy name shall ye no more profane with your gifts, and with your idols.
39As for you, people of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD says: Go ahead and serve your idols, every one of you! But afterward, you will surely listen to me and stop shaming my holy name with your gifts and your idols.
40For in my holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord Jehovah, there shall all the house of Israel, all of them, serve me in the land: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the first-fruits of your oblations, with all your holy things.
40For on my holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, says the Lord GOD, the entire house of Israel will worship me in the land. I will accept them there, and there I will require your offerings, your best gifts, and all your holy sacrifices.
41As a sweet savor will I accept you, when I bring you out from the peoples, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you in the sight of the nations.
41I will accept you like the smell of pleasing incense when I bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries where you were scattered. I will show my holiness through you while the nations watch.
42And ye shall know that I am Jehovah, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country which I sware to give unto your fathers.
42Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel—the land I swore to give to your ancestors.
43And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have polluted yourselves; and ye shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.
43There you will remember your conduct and all the ways you polluted yourselves, and you will hate yourselves for all the evil things you have done.
44And ye shall know that I am Jehovah, when I have dealt with you for my name’s sake, not according to your evil ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord Jehovah.
44You will know that I am the LORD, O house of Israel, when I deal with you for the sake of my name's honor and not according to your evil ways and corrupt actions, says the Lord GOD.’
46Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the field in the South;
46'Son of man, look toward the south. Speak out against the south and prophesy against the forest land of the Negev.
47and say to the forest of the South, Hear the word of Jehovah: Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burnt thereby.
47Say to the southern forest: ‘Hear the word of the LORD. This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to set fire to you. It will burn up every tree, both green and dry. The blazing flames will not be put out, and every face from south to north will be scorched by them.’
