1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and the Saviour Jesus Christ:

1From Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ. To those who have received a faith as precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

2Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;

2May grace and peace be given to you in even greater measure as you grow in your knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

3seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue;

3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and for living a godly life. This comes through knowing the one who called us by his own glory and excellence.

4whereby he hath granted unto us his precious and exceeding great promises; that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.

4Through these, he has given us his very great and precious promises. Because of these promises, you can share in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

5Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in your virtue knowledge;

5For this reason, make every effort to add excellence to your faith, and add knowledge to your excellence.

6and in your knowledge self-control; and in your self-control patience; and in your patience godliness;

6To knowledge add self-control, to self-control add patient endurance, and to patient endurance add godliness.

7and in your godliness brotherly kindness; and in your brotherly kindness love.

7To godliness add brotherly affection, and to brotherly affection add love.

8For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

8If you have these qualities and they are increasing, they will keep you from being useless or unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.

9But anyone who lacks these things is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they were cleansed from their past sins.

10Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble:

10Therefore, brothers and sisters, work even harder to prove that God has called and chosen you. If you do these things, you will never fall away.

11for thus shall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

11In this way, you will be given a grand entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12Wherefore I shall be ready always to put you in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and are established in the truth which is with you.

12So I will always remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have.

13And I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

13I think it is right to keep refreshing your memory as long as I live in the "tent" of this body.

14knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle cometh swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ signified unto me.

14I know that I will soon be leaving this body, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

15Yea, I will give diligence that at every time ye may be able after my decease to call these things to remembrance.

15I will do my best to make sure that after I am gone, you will always be able to remember these things.

16For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

16We were not following clever stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. No, we saw his majesty with our own eyes.

17For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when there was borne such a voice to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased:

17He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice from the Majestic Glory spoke to him, saying, "This is my dearly loved Son, and I am very pleased with him."

18and this voice we ourselves heard borne out of heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount.

18We ourselves heard this voice from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.

19And we have the word of prophecy made more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:

19Because of that, we have even greater confidence in the message spoken by the prophets. You should pay close attention to it, like a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

20knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation.

20Most importantly, you must understand that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own interpretation.

21For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.

21No prophecy was ever made just because a human wanted it. Instead, people spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
