1Surely God is good to Israel, Evento such as are pure in heart.

1Truly God is good to Israel, especially to those whose hearts are pure.

2But as for me, my feet were almost gone; My steps had well nigh slipped.

2But as for me, I almost lost my footing; my feet had nearly slipped away.

3For I was envious at the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

3For I was jealous of the proud when I saw how well the wicked were doing.

4For there are no pangs in their death; But their strength is firm.

4They don't seem to suffer when they die; their bodies stay strong and healthy.

5They are not in trouble asothermen; Neither are they plagued likeothermen.

5They don't have the same struggles as other people; they aren't struck by the same problems as everyone else.

6Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; Violence covereth them as a garment.

6Therefore, pride hangs around their necks like a necklace, and violence covers them like a robe.

7Their eyes stand out with fatness: They have more than heart could wish.

7Their eyes bulge out from their fat faces; their hearts overflow with foolish desires.

8They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression: They speak loftily.

8They mock others and speak with evil intent about oppression; they talk as if they are superior to everyone.

9They have set their mouth in the heavens, And their tongue walketh through the earth.

9They speak as if they own the heavens, and their tongues brag throughout the earth.

10Therefore his people return hither: And waters of a fullcupare drained by them.

10Because of this, God's people turn to follow their lead and drink up all their claims.

11And they say, How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?

11They say, 'How could God know? Does the Most High really see what is happening?'

12Behold, these are the wicked; And, being alway at ease, they increase in riches.

12Look at these wicked people! They are always at ease, and their wealth just keeps growing.

13Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocency;

13Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I wash my hands in innocence for no reason?

14For all the day long have I been plagued, And chastened every morning.

14Because all day long I have been suffering, and I am disciplined every single morning.

15If I had said, I will speak thus; Behold, I had dealt treacherously with the generation of thy children.

15If I had actually said these things out loud, I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

16When I thought how I might know this, It was too painful for me;

16When I tried to understand all this, it was too difficult and painful for me to figure out,

17Until I went into the sanctuary of God, And considered their latter end.

17until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I finally understood what will happen to them in the end.

18Surely thou settest them in slippery places: Thou castest them down to destruction.

18You certainly put them on slippery ground; you make them fall down to their ruin.

19How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.

19In an instant, they are destroyed! They are completely swept away by terrors.

20As a dream when one awaketh, So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image.

20They are like a dream when someone wakes up; when you arise, O Lord, you will make their memory vanish.

21For my soul was grieved, And I was pricked in my heart:

21When my soul was bitter and I felt pierced in my heart,

22So brutish was I, and ignorant; I wasasa beast before thee.

22I was foolish and ignorant; I acted like a mindless animal toward you.

23Nevertheless I am continually with thee: Thou hast holden my right hand.

23Even so, I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.

24Thou wilt guide me with thy counsel, And afterward receive me to glory.

24You guide me with your advice, and later you will welcome me into glory.

25Whom have I in heavenbut thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee.

25Who do I have in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth I desire besides you.

26My flesh and my heart faileth; ButGod is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.

26My body and my heart may grow weak, but God is the strength of my heart and everything I need forever.

27For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: Thou hast destroyed all them that play the harlot, departing from thee.

27Those who stay far from you will perish; you destroy everyone who is unfaithful to you.

28But it is good for me to draw near unto God: I have made the Lord Jehovah my refuge, That I may tell of all thy works.

28But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my place of safety so that I can tell everyone about all the things you have done.
