2Can a man be profitable unto God? Surely he that is wise is profitable unto himself.
2Can a person be of any real use to God? Even a wise person is only useful to himself.
3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gainto him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
3Does it matter to the Almighty if you are righteous? Does he gain anything if your conduct is perfect?
4Is it for thy fear of him that he reproveth thee, That he entereth with thee into judgment?
4Is it because of your devotion that he punishes you and brings you into court?
5Is not thy wickedness great? Neither is there any end to thine iniquities.
5No, it is because your wickedness is great and your sins have no end.
6For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, And stripped the naked of their clothing.
6You have taken property from your relatives as security for debts they didn't owe, and you have left people naked by taking their clothes.
7Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, And thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
7You gave no water to the thirsty and you withheld food from the hungry.
8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; And the honorable man, he dwelt in it.
8You were a powerful man who owned the land; you were a privileged person living in it.
9Thou hast sent widows away empty, And the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
9You sent widows away with nothing and you crushed the hopes of orphans.
10Therefore snares are round about thee, And sudden fear troubleth thee,
10That is why traps are all around you and sudden terror fills you with dread.
11Or darkness, so that thou canst not see, And abundance of waters cover thee.
11That is why it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.
12Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
12Isn't God high in the heavens? Look at the highest stars, how far up they are!
13And thou sayest, What doth God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?
13Yet you say, 'What does God know? Can he judge us through the deep darkness?'
14Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he seeth not; And he walketh on the vault of heaven.
14You think thick clouds hide him so he cannot see us as he walks on the dome of heaven.
15Wilt thou keep the old way Which wicked men have trodden?
15Are you going to stay on the old path that wicked people have walked?
16Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundation was poured out as a stream,
16They were carried away before their time; their foundations were washed away by a flood.
17Who said unto God, Depart from us; And, What can the Almighty do for us?
17They said to God, 'Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?'
18Yet he filled their houses with good things: But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
18Yet it was God who filled their houses with good things. I want nothing to do with the advice of the wicked.
19The righteous see it, and are glad; And the innocent laugh them to scorn,
19Godly people see their destruction and are glad; the innocent laugh at them in scorn,
20Saying, Surely they that did rise up against us are cut off, And the remnant of them the fire hath consumed.
20saying, 'Surely our enemies are destroyed, and fire has consumed what was left of their wealth.'
21Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: Thereby good shall come unto thee.
21Give in to God and be at peace; then good things will come to you.
22Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, And lay up his words in thy heart.
22Accept instruction from his mouth and keep his words in your heart.
23If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, If thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents.
23If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; you must remove wickedness far from your home.
24And lay thou thy treasure in the dust, Andthe gold ofOphir among the stones of the brooks;
24If you throw your gold in the dust and your gold of Ophir among the rocks of the ravines,
25And the Almighty will be thy treasure, And precious silver unto thee.
25then the Almighty will be your gold and your most precious silver.
26For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, And shalt lift up thy face unto God.
26Then you will find delight in the Almighty and you will be able to look up to God.
27Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee; And thou shalt pay thy vows.
27You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill the promises you made to him.
28Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; And light shall shine upon thy ways.
28Whatever you decide to do will happen, and light will shine on your path.
