1Moreover the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the guard, saying,

1The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah a second time while he was still a prisoner in the courtyard of the guard:

2Thus saith Jehovah that doeth it, Jehovah that formeth it to establish it; Jehovah is his name:

2This is what the LORD says—the one who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it; the LORD is his name:

3Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and will show thee great things, and difficult, which thou knowest not.

3Call to me and I will answer you. I will tell you great and hidden things that you do not know.

4For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are broken down to make a defence against the mounds and against the sword;

4For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses in this city and the royal palaces of Judah that have been torn down to be used as defenses against the siege ramps and the sword:

5while men come to fight with the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my wrath, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city:

5The people are coming to fight the Babylonians, but they will only fill these places with the dead bodies of those I have struck down in my fierce anger. I have hidden my face from this city because of all its wickedness.

6Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them; and I will reveal unto them abundance of peace and truth.

6But look, I will bring health and healing to this city. I will heal my people and let them enjoy great peace and security.

7And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.

7I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before.

8And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned against me, and whereby they have transgressed against me.

8I will cleanse them from all the sin they committed against me, and I will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.

9And this city shall be to me for a name of joy, for a praise and for a glory, before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them, and shall fear and tremble for all the good and for all the peace that I procure unto it.

9Then this city will bring me joy, praise, and glory before all the nations of the earth. They will hear about all the good things I do for my people, and they will tremble with awe because of the peace and prosperity I provide for it.

10Thus saith Jehovah: Yet again there shall be heard in this place, whereof ye say, It is waste, without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without beast,

10This is what the LORD says: You say this place is a wasteland, without people or animals. But in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are now deserted, there will be heard once more:

11the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that say, Give thanks to Jehovah of hosts, for Jehovah is good, for his lovingkindness endureth for ever; and of them that bring sacrifices of thanksgiving into the house of Jehovah. For I will cause the captivity of the land to return as at the first, saith Jehovah.

11the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of the bride and groom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings to the LORD's temple, saying, 'Give thanks to the LORD of Armies, for the LORD is good; his faithful love lasts forever.' For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were in the beginning, says the LORD.

12Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet again shall there be in this place, which is waste, without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, a habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down.

12This is what the LORD of Armies says: In this place that is a wasteland without people or animals, and in all its towns, there will again be pastures where shepherds can rest their flocks.

13In the cities of the hill-country, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks again pass under the hands of him that numbereth them, saith Jehovah.

13In the towns of the hill country, the western foothills, and the South, in the land of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, and in the towns of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hand of the one who counts them, says the LORD.

14Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will perform that good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and concerning the house of Judah.

14The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.

15In those days, and at that time, will I cause a Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

15In those days and at that time, I will make a righteous Branch grow from David’s line; he will do what is fair and right in the land.

16In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely; and this is the name whereby she shall be called: Jehovah our righteousness.

16In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which she will be called: The LORD Is Our Righteousness.

17For thus saith Jehovah: David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

17For this is what the LORD says: David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the nation of Israel.

18neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt-offerings, and to burn meal-offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.

18Nor will the Levitical priests ever fail to have a man to stand before me to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to present sacrifices.

19And the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, saying,

19The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

20Thus saith Jehovah: If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, so that there shall not be day and night in their season;

20This is what the LORD says: If you could break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night do not come at their appointed times,

21then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he shall not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

21then my covenant with David my servant could be broken, and he would no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne; and my covenant with the Levitical priests who serve me could also be broken.

22As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured; so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.

22I will make the descendants of my servant David and the Levites who serve me as countless as the stars in the sky and as immeasurable as the sand on the seashore.

23And the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah, saying,

23The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

24Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which Jehovah did choose, he hath cast them off? thus do they despise my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.

24Have you noticed that these people are saying, 'The LORD has rejected the two families he chose'? They are treating my people with such contempt that they no longer consider them a nation.

25Thus saith Jehovah: If my covenant of day and night stand not, if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;

25This is what the LORD says: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the laws of heaven and earth,

26then will I also cast away the seed of Jacob, and of David my servant, so that I will not take of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and will have mercy on them.

26then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have mercy on them.
