1Woe to thee that destroyest, and thou wast not destroyed; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! When thou hast ceased to destroy, thou shalt be destroyed; and when thou hast made an end of dealing treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.
1You are doomed, you destroyer who has not yet been destroyed! You are doomed, you traitor who has not been betrayed! When you finish destroying, you will be destroyed. When you finish being a traitor, others will betray you.
2O Jehovah, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou our arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.
2O LORD, be merciful to us; we have waited for you. Be our strength every morning and our salvation when we are in trouble.
3At the noise of the tumult the peoples are fled; at the lifting up of thyself the nations are scattered.
3At the sound of your loud voice, the people run away; when you stand up, the nations scatter.
4And your spoil shall be gathered as the caterpillar gathereth: as locusts leap shall men leap upon it.
4The loot from your army will be gathered as easily as caterpillars strip a field; men will pounce on it like a swarm of locusts.
5Jehovah is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
5The LORD is great because he lives in heaven; he has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
6And there shall be stability in thy times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge: the fear of Jehovah is thy treasure.
6He will be the foundation of your life. He gives a rich supply of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is your greatest treasure.
7Behold, their valiant ones cry without; the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.
7Look, their brave men are crying in the streets; the messengers who tried to make peace are weeping bitterly.
8The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: the enemy hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth not man.
8The highways are empty, and no one travels anymore. The enemy has broken the treaty; he hates the cities and has no respect for anyone.
9The land mourneth and languisheth; Lebanon is confounded and withereth away; Sharon is like a desert; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.
9The land mourns and wastes away; Lebanon is ashamed and withers. Sharon has become like a desert, and the trees of Bashan and Carmel drop their leaves.
10Now will I arise, saith Jehovah; now will I lift up myself; now will I be exalted.
10'Now I will get up,' says the LORD. 'Now I will stand tall; now I will be honored.'
11Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath is a fire that shall devour you.
11Your plans are like dry grass and your actions are like stubble; your own breath is a fire that will consume you.
12And the peoples shall be as the burnings of lime, as thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.
12The nations will be burned up like lime, or like cut thorns that are thrown into the fire.
13Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might.
13You people far away, listen to what I have done; and you who are near, realize how powerful I am.
14The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath seized the godless ones: Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?
14The sinners in Zion are terrified; the ungodly people are shaking with fear. They ask, 'Who among us can live with this consuming fire? Who among us can survive this eternal burning?'
15He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from taking a bribe, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil:
15The one who lives a right life and speaks the truth; who refuses to profit from cheating others and keeps his hands from taking bribes; who closes his ears to plots of murder and shuts his eyes to avoid looking at evil.
16He shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks; his bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.
16That person will live in a safe, high place; his fortress will be the rocky cliffs. He will always have food given to him and his water will never run out.
17Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold a land that reacheth afar.
17Your eyes will see the king in his splendor; you will look out over a land that stretches far away.
18Thy heart shall muse on the terror: Where is he that counted, where is he that weighed the tribute? where is he that counted the towers?
18You will look back on your past terror and think: 'Where is the officer who counted our money? Where is the one who weighed the tax? Where is the scout who mapped out our towers?'
19Thou shalt not see the fierce people, a people of a deep speech that thou canst not comprehend, of a strange tongue that thou canst not understand.
19You will no longer see those arrogant people with their strange language that you can’t make out and their babbling tongues that you don’t understand.
20Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tent that shall not be removed, the stakes whereof shall never be plucked up, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.
20Look at Zion, the city of our religious festivals. Your eyes will see Jerusalem as a peaceful home, a tent that will never be moved. Its stakes will never be pulled up, and none of its ropes will ever break.
21But there Jehovah will be with us in majesty, a place of broad rivers and streams, wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.
21Instead, the LORD will be there for us in his majesty. It will be a place of wide rivers and streams, but no enemy ships with oars will sail there, and no great warships will pass by.
22For Jehovah is our judge, Jehovah is our lawgiver, Jehovah is our king; he will save us.
22For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he is the one who will save us.
23Thy tacklings are loosed; they could not strengthen the foot of their mast, they could not spread the sail: then was the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame took the prey.
23Now your ship's ropes are loose; the mast is not steady, and the sails cannot be spread. Then a massive amount of loot will be divided up; even the lame will take a share of the prize.
