1All the commandment which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers.

1Be careful to obey every command I am giving you today, so that you may live, increase in number, and enter to take over the land the LORD promised to your ancestors.

2And thou shalt remember all the way which Jehovah thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or not.

2Remember how the LORD your God led you through the desert for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to find out what was in your heart and if you would obey his commands.

3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by everything that proceedeth out of the mouth of Jehovah doth man live.

3He humbled you by letting you get hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food neither you nor your ancestors had ever known. He did this to teach you that people do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

4Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

4Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.

5And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so Jehovah thy God chasteneth thee.

5Understand in your heart that just as a father disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you.

6And thou shalt keep the commandments of Jehovah thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

6So obey the commands of the LORD your God by living the way he wants and by fearing him.

7For Jehovah thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;

7The LORD your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with streams of water, springs, and underground water flowing through the valleys and hills.

8a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey;

8It is a land of wheat and barley, grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey.

9a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig copper.

9It is a land where you will never be hungry for food and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

10And thou shalt eat and be full, and thou shalt bless Jehovah thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

10When you have eaten and are full, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.

11Beware lest thou forget Jehovah thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

11Be careful not to forget the LORD your God by failing to keep his commands, laws, and rules that I am giving you today.

12lest, when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

12Otherwise, when you have eaten and are full, and have built nice houses to live in,

13and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

13and when your herds and flocks get large, and your silver and gold increase, and everything you own multiplies,

14then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget Jehovah thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

14you might become proud and forget the LORD your God. He is the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you were slaves.

15who led thee through the great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents and scorpions, and thirsty ground where was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

15He led you through that vast and terrifying desert filled with poisonous snakes and scorpions. It was a thirsty land with no water, but he brought water out of a solid rock for you.

16who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not; that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end:

16He fed you manna in the desert, something your ancestors had never known, to humble you and test you so that in the end things would go well for you.

17and lest thou say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.

17You might say to yourself, 'My own power and strength have made me this wealthy.'

18But thou shalt remember Jehovah thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as at this day.

18But remember the LORD your God, because he is the one who gives you the power to get wealth. He does this to keep the covenant promise he made to your ancestors, as he is doing today.

19And it shall be, if thou shalt forget Jehovah thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

19If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods, serving and worshiping them, I warn you today that you will certainly be destroyed.

20As the nations that Jehovah maketh to perish before you, so shall ye perish; because ye would not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah your God.

20Just like the nations the LORD is destroying before you, you will also be destroyed if you do not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.
