1In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans,
1In the first year of the reign of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, a Mede by birth, who was made king over the Babylonian empire,
2in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years whereof the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the accomplishing of the desolations of Jerusalem, even seventy years.
2during that first year, I, Daniel, was studying the scriptures. I noticed the word the LORD had given to Jeremiah the prophet, stating that Jerusalem would lie in ruins for seventy years.
3And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
3So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition. I fasted, wore rough burlap, and sprinkled ashes on myself.
4And I prayed unto Jehovah my God, and made confession, and said, Oh, Lord, the great and dreadful God, who keepeth covenant and lovingkindness with them that love him and keep his commandments,
4I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed, saying: 'O Lord, you are the great and awesome God. You always keep your covenant and show constant love to those who love you and obey your commands.
5we have sinned, and have dealt perversely, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even turning aside from thy precepts and from thine ordinances;
5But we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws.
6neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, that spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
6We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our leaders, our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.
7O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of face, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
7Lord, you are right in everything you do, but today we are covered in shame. This includes the people of Judah and Jerusalem, and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you scattered them because they were unfaithful to you.
8O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
8O LORD, we, our kings, our leaders, and our ancestors are covered in shame because we have sinned against you.
9To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness; for we have rebelled against him;
9But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.
10neither have we obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.
10We have not obeyed the LORD our God or followed the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.
11Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even turning aside, that they should not obey thy voice: therefore hath the curse been poured out upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God; for we have sinned against him.
11All Israel has broken your law and turned away, refusing to obey you. Therefore, the curses and judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us because we sinned against you.
12And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil; for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
12You have carried out the warnings you spoke against us and our rulers by bringing a great disaster upon us. Nothing like what happened to Jerusalem has ever happened anywhere else under heaven.
13As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet have we not entreated the favor of Jehovah our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in thy truth.
13Every bit of this disaster has come upon us just as it is written in the Law of Moses. Yet we have not tried to please the LORD our God by turning from our sins and paying attention to your truth.
14Therefore hath Jehovah watched over the evil, and brought it upon us; for Jehovah our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth, and we have not obeyed his voice.
14Therefore, the LORD did not hesitate to bring this disaster upon us. The LORD our God is right in everything he does, yet we still have not obeyed him.
15And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
15And now, Lord our God, you brought your people out of Egypt with a powerful hand and made a name for yourself that continues to this day. But we have sinned and done evil things.
16O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, let thine anger and thy wrath, I pray thee, be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are round about us.
16O Lord, because of all your righteous acts, please turn your anger and fury away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. Because of our sins and the sins of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of scorn to everyone around us.
17Now therefore, O our God, hearken unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.
17Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your own sake, Lord, look with favor on your holy place that now lies in ruins.
18O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies’ sake.
18Listen closely, my God, and hear us. Open your eyes and see our misery and the city that bears your name. We do not ask this because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.
19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God, because thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
19O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your own sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your name.'
20And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Jehovah my God for the holy mountain of my God;
20While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and pleading with the LORD my God for his holy mountain,
21yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
21Gabriel, the man I had seen in my earlier vision, came to me in swift flight at about the time of the evening sacrifice.
22And he instructed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee wisdom and understanding.
22He explained things to me, saying, 'Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.
23At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment went forth, and I am come to tell thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision.
23The moment you began praying, a command was given, and I have come to tell it to you because you are very precious to God. Listen carefully to the message so you can understand the vision.
24Seventy weeks are decreed upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.
24Seventy weeks are ordered for your people and your holy city to stop the rebellion, to put an end to sin, to pay for wrongdoing, to bring in lasting righteousness, to confirm the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
25Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the anointed one, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: it shall be built again, with street and moat, even in troublous times.
25Understand this: From the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the Ruler, comes, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and a defensive trench, but these will be troubled times.
26And after the threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined.
26After the sixty-two weeks, the Anointed One will be killed and will have nothing. The people of a ruler who is coming will destroy the city and the temple. The end will come like a flood, and war will continue until the end, just as destruction has been decided.
27And he shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease; and upon the wing of abominations shall come one that maketh desolate; and even unto the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out upon the desolate.
27That ruler will make a firm treaty with many people for one week. In the middle of that week, he will bring an end to sacrifices and offerings. And on a wing of the temple, he will set up a horrible thing that causes destruction until the finished end that is decided is poured out on the destroyer.'
